Award-winning author and illustrator Floyd Cooper was the illustrator of over 90 childrens books. He received the Coretta Scott King Honor Award three times and the Coretta Scott King Award for Illustration in 2009 for The Blacker the Berry. From the Land of Milk and Honey was nominated for a 2013 NAACP IMAGE AWARD for literature, and These Hands was awarded the 2012 Sankei Award in Japan for outstanding illustration. Floyd traveled extensively, sharing his talents in schools and conferences across America. He lived in Easton, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Velma, and two sons, Dayton and Kai. Sadly, Floyd passed away in 2021.

Cooper's signature oil wash and eraser technique elevates the presentation beyond the purely instructional. . . .Cooper depicts the Selma to Montgomery March, a schoolroom, a church, and the rear view of a historic inauguration, making this a useful title for a bird's-eye perspective of the subject.-- "School Library Journal"

Being a children's historical fiction and a diversity book makes Juneteenth for Mazie a picture book that deserves more than a quick glance. . . .Cooper's technique does give the spreads the look and feel of a time long ago that has aged, but never lost its details, despite repeat readings. . . .[Cooper] keeps the story and history lesson interesting, thoughtful, and accessible to young children.-- "Kid Lit Reviews"
